Screen-Free Preschool: Why We Choose Real World Experiences
There’s something about a corded phone that is timeless. A spring, lots of buttons and clicking sounds to enjoy!
If you've ever felt guilty handing your toddler a tablet at a restaurant, take a deep breath. This isn't about shaming parents or pretending technology doesn't exist. It’s everywhere now, and that's our reality!
Let's Be Honest About Screens
Screens are part of modern life. We're not here to demonise technology or suggest it has no place in family life. We see many families who use technology out of desperation for a moment of peace and quiet, or who tell us that their child will not eat without their favourite YouTube video. It’s not as uncommon as you think!
But here's the thing: children do not need a tablet or screen to get through the day or a mealtime. People raised children before the 2010s; toddlers sat through meals and car journeys without an iPad and didn’t have meltdowns over Coco-Melon. This isn't nostalgia for days gone by; it's recognizing that necessity is often just convenience in disguise.
The real question isn't whether technology exists in our lives, but HOW we integrate it into our children's lives.
When Technology Actually Adds Value
Not all screen time is created equal. Thoughtful integration can support connection and learning:
Family movie nights: When everyone watches the same show together, you're creating shared experiences and teaching children that entertainment isn't always on demand. They learn to engage with what's available and enjoy it together.
Age appropriate STEM toys: Technological toys that match developmental stages encourage problem solving and creativity.
Old technology has charm: One of our favourite classroom toys is our collection of rotary phones in the role play areas! Children are fascinated by them, proving that technology doesn't need to be cutting edge to inspire imaginative play.
Audio Stories and Music: Technology like the Toni Box and YouTube can be wonderful tools for encouraging a sense of calm and allowing children’s imaginations to wander, as well as focus, while engaging in other activities like meal times or winding down for the night.
Why Preschool Is Naturally Screen Free
Here's what we've discovered: children in quality preschool settings are simply too busy to care about screens.
When you create environments rich with resources and inspiring invitations to play, children don't ask for screens. They're absorbed in building structures, negotiating dramatic role play, mixing colours or digging in the mud kitchen.
We enrich our children through thoughtfully designed spaces that spark curiosity. This is what all good early years settings should do: create environments so compelling that a child's natural instinct to explore takes over completely.
When children have open ended materials, time for unstructured play, and supportive adults, screens become irrelevant. They have everything they need: the real world in all its tactile, sensory glory.
The Critical Window We Can't Get Back
0-6 years old is a critical window for interpersonal relationships that we cannot come back to later. These formative preschool years are when children learn essential skills for human connection:
Social interaction fundamentals: Reading facial expressions, interpreting tone, understanding body language
Negotiation and compromise: Learning that others have different desires and finding ways to navigate those differences
Turn taking and patience: Waiting for the swing, sharing materials, understanding you can't always be first
Communication skills: Expressing needs clearly, developing friendships, resolving conflicts with words
Empathy development: Beginning to understand and respond to how others feel
These skills require thousands of real interactions with real people in real time. They need the messiness of actual relationships: the disappointments, the joys, the misunderstandings, the repairs.
We can teach children to use a phone or computer later. They'll pick up digital literacy quickly when the time comes. But we cannot rebuild the neural pathways for human connection if we miss this window.
The Real World Is Still Enough
Being screen free at preschool means prioritising what matters most during these irreplaceable years.
At Kid's Island, children spend their days engaged with materials they can touch, people they can connect with, and experiences requiring their full presence. When they leave, they know how to entertain themselves, engage deeply with activities, navigate social situations, and find joy in real world experiences.
In a world constantly telling us we need more, faster, and shinier, preschools can say the real world is still enough. Enough to captivate, challenge, and inspire wonder.
Technology will be there when they're ready. Childhood won't wait!
